Department of Homeland Security Warns of Political Extremism in Heated Midterm Year

by Eric Lendrum

On Tuesday, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) issued a warning about a “heightened threat environment” ahead of the coming midterm elections in November.

The Daily Caller reports that the warning was made in a bulletin released by the department, “regarding the continued heightened threat environment across the United States.”

DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas released a statement on the matter, declaring that “as recent acts of violence in communities across the country have so tragically demonstrated, the nation remains in a heightened threat environment, and we expect that environment will become more dynamic in the coming months.”

“The Department of Homeland Security remains steadfast in our commitment to provide timely information and resources to the American public and our partners across every level of government, in law enforcement, and in the private sector,” Mayorkas continued.

The DHS bulletin warns that the political environment in the United States will become “more dynamic as several high-profile events could be exploited to justify acts of violence against a range of possible targets.” This environment will see hot-button political issues exploited by radical domestic actors to gin up hatred of political opponents and systematically target those involved with certain sides of key issues.

An anonymous DHS official had previously warned that, in particular, the leak of the Supreme Court’s alleged decision to overturn the pro-abortion ruling Roe v. Wade could lead to pro-abortion violence against pro-life organizations and individuals. Shortly after the draft was leaked in early May, at least two pro-life organizations’ headquarters were firebombed by far-left domestic terrorists.

The Associated Press reports that another area of concern for DHS is the question of the immigration health policy Title 42, and whether or not it will be repealed. Although the Biden Administration vowed to end the policy, a federal judge recently ruled that the administration must leave it in place and continue enforcing it; DHS officials allegedly worry that keeping Title 42 in effect could lead to violence by pro-illegal alien extremists.
